Shopping Local: Great Design and Décor Stores in Portland

New Year, New Decor: Where to Shop Local in Portland

You’ve all heard the phrase “New Year, New You,” so why not “New Year, New Home?” Don’t worry, this doesn’t mean you need to start scouring for new properties or overhaul your entire home, but the new year is a great time to revamp your style as you incorporate new decor pieces into your space.

Whether you’re ready to splurge on a big-ticket item like a couch or new kitchen appliances, or you’re on the hunt for a striking art piece, here are the best places to shop for home décor items in Portland.

Palace

2205 E Burnside St, Portland, OR 97214

Don’t let the store’s clothing-centric Instagram feed fool you; Palace Store is a great place to shop for small and pick-up decor items for your home. Sometimes it’s the details that elevate your home’s style, and this PDX design shop is the perfect place to find that choice accent item. Favorite finds: ceramics from Glasswing in Seattle and the cutest ramen bowls we ever did see.

Schoolhouse Electric & Supply Co.

2181 NW Nicolai St, Portland, OR 97210

A store with a unique history, Schoolhouse Electric is #goals for all modernist designers. Rumor has it that Schoolhouse Electric’s founder Brian Faherty stumbled upon a collection of cast-iron shade molds, then lovingly restored them to unique lighting fixtures; we’ve been obsessed ever since. The industrial space has expanded its inventory beyond lighting, and you can now find unique furniture and decor that’s handcrafted in-house by the Schoolhouse Electric team.

Maven

7819 SE Stark St, Portland, OR 97215

In today’s design world, who said plants don’t count as decor? Houseplants continue to remain trendy decor items in 2018, and the fad doesn’t seem to be waning anytime soon. If you’re eager to add a bit of greenery to your home, visit Maven Collective. Tucked away in the Montavilla neighborhood, this PDX design shop is off the tourist radar, but it’s well worth the trip. After you’ve stocked up on plants and custom ceramics, pick up a few vintage wares from the back of the shop.

The Good Mod

1313 West Burnside Street, 4th Floor, Portland, OR 97209

An architect or designer’s dream store, The Good Mod is known for its streamlined collection of upscale items. Housed in a 20,000 square foot industrial loft above an old parking garage, the store is a modernist haven. Whether you’re searching for custom design work, or a designer focal piece from Saarinen or Svensson, the Good Mod offers furniture and design items that will have your houseguests admiring your decor with envy.

Cargo

81 SE Yamhill St, Portland, OR 97214

Portland’s catch-all decor shop, Cargo offers everything from bookcases to office chairs. If you’re searching to replace big home decor items on a dime, this is your one-stop shop. Think IKEA, but local. And quirky. Favorite finds at Cargo include: handprinted Chinese lanterns, unique ceramic hardware, and leather lounge chairs.

Midnight Sunlight

2857 SE Stark St, Portland, OR 97214

This shop opened quietly in 2017, but we’re ready to celebrate the Sunnyside gem’s arrival with loud praise. As a vintage furniture store that specializes in mid-century items, Midnight Sunlight distinguishes itself from other like-minded Portland vintage shops by featuring some of the best prices in town. In addition to sourcing immaculate chairs and couches, you’ll also find vintage dishes, rugs, and knickknacks, too. Pro tip: if you’re buying a complete set, the owners are known to strike a bargain.
